Cleaning a Fireclay Sink

Clean your fireclay sink with mild soap and warm water or a gentle general purpose cleaner. Wipe the entire surface dry witha clean, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or metallic wire sponges. To avoid potential stains or damage to the finish, avoid soaking dishes for abnormally long periods of time and refrain from leaving coffee grounds or teabags in the sink.

Protective grid is recommended in the bottom of the ink to avoid scuffing from heavy-duty cookware. If scuffing does occur, it can be easily buffed out with Gel Gloass and a clean, soft, dry cloth.

What is Fireclay Sink?

Fireclay is a natural clay, a variation of vitreous chinan that has greater amounts of quartz and feldspar (minerals). It is denser, thicker, and approximately 30% heavier than regular clay. These characteristics allow for a durable, smooth, flat surface on large fixtures not attainable with standard vitreous china.

Advantage of Fireclay Sink?

The fireclay sink takes on a new life as it moves into the new age. No longer confined to the farmhouse, it has become a distinctive design statement in any kitchen, bathroom, or laundrey room because they are attractive, durable, stain resistant, and spacious.

  • The Quality of the Finish - The glazing of the sink surface provides both durability and shine over long periods of time. The raw material used, Fine Fireclay, allows for uniformity in the finish.
  • Durability -  The sinks glaze is practically impervious to threatening bacteria from food preparation. Stains do not penetrate the glaze and can be easily wiped away. Acids and chemical cleaners have virtually no adverse effect on sink. Coffee stains, cigarette burns, and other daily occurances, that would adversely effect kitchen sinks made from other materials, are easily wiped away on Whitehaus Collection Fireclay Sinks.
  • Scratches - These sinks are not adversely affected by scratches from pots, pans, knifes, etc., and there can be easily wiped away.
  • Thermal Shock - Thermal Shock (very hot or very cold water) has no affect whatsoever on the sink.

Fireclay Process

Our Fireclay Sinks continue to be handmade in a slip casting process that takes several days to produce a single sink.

  • First, the honey-texured liquefied fireclay is poured into a two-piece porus mould.
  • Once the excess water has been absorbed and the sinks have set, the moulds are opened.
  • The sinks are removed from the moulds hand finished, and slowly dried to prevent cracking.
  • An extra-thick coating of endobe glaze is applied by hand.
  • The sinks are sprayed with a mixture made from finely ground glass and fired in a kiln at 1250°C to fuse the glaze onto the sink.
  • After the sink cools, it is inspected for flaws, and only those very best quality sinks are accepted.
